Production Center of Anchovies and Salted Fish That Are Full of Garbage
Pasaran Island is a center for the production of anchovies and salted fish in Lampung Province, covering an area of 13 hectares. Inhabited by more than 1,500 people or 354 households, this island has the potential to be developed into a city tourism area through sustainable coastal area management.
However, the waste generation on Pasaran Island reaches around 149,000 kg per year, of which 64% are plastic residue. Besides being located at the estuary of three rivers from the city of Bandar Lampung, the limited access experienced by the community in understanding the importance of waste reduction and management, as well as the lack of access to waste collection and recycling, are causes of this problem. As a result, the waste on Pasaran Island is not properly managed, polluting the waters around the island and disrupting the daily lives of the community, primarily fishermen.
90%
of the community in Pasaran Island dispose of waste onto land and sea*
Lack of access
to waste transportation on the island.
2,864 kg
of waste accumulated on the island per week.

Implemented Solution
The Pasaran Wawai project is designed to empower coastal communities in the transition towards circular economy-based coastal waste management.
In its implementation, the project that are run by changemakers from various sectors collaborates with all stakeholders in the waste value chain to: reduce waste generation, prevent leakage of waste into the environment, and provide economic benefits to the surrounding communities to enhance their well-being.

Integrated Environmental Education
Focused on changing the behavior of the people at Pulau Pasaran. This involves educating households and MSMEs on how to reduce waste from sources, improve waste management sorting practices, and process organic waste.
Digital Waste Pick-up Platform
Initiation of a digital waste pick-up platform to facilitate the collection and transportation of waste to RINDU (Rumah Inovasi Daur Ulang or Recycling Innovation House) - a waste management site, waste bank, and a 3R (reduce, reuse, recycle) based waste processing site.
Waste Recycling Technology
Organic waste processing at the source location, and upcycling residual waste (low-value waste) into roster products (concrete ventilation) at RINDU to provide economic benefits.
Changemakers Running the Project
Gajahlah Kebersihan is an organization that has been active since 2017. Their main focus is on marine waste management, empowering coastal and urban communities through education, seminars, training, and social media campaigns. To date, they have educated more than 30,500 people.
Angkuts is a digital-based waste transportation service aimed at reducing the habit of littering. Founded by young entrepreneurs, Angkuts works with the local community by hiring them as driver partners to improve their income.
Askara Cendekia is a non-profit research institution aimed at raising awareness and knowledge among the public regarding social, economic, health, and environmental issues through programs and initiatives supported by data-backed knowledge and understanding of important issues.
Learnings from Pasaran Wawai Project
Organic Waste Processing
Rindu was initially planned for inorganic waste processing. However, there had still been a significant amount of organic waste collected without further handling. Maggot cultivation facilities were then built in February 2023 to ensure that the waste was not disposed to landfill.
Confluence of Rivers
Despite the significant amount of waste reduced and managed, there is still a challenge to reduce waste coming from other parts of the city. This is because Pasaran Island's location sits at the confluence of several rivers. The potential for scale-up in other areas is expected to solve this issue.
Potential for Eco-edutourism
Pasaran Island has been included in Bandar Lampung Tourism Master Plan 2022-2025. Eco-edutourism concept along with support for the local community may help ensure the waste is managed properly while realizing Pasaran Island's potential for tourism.
Co-creation with the Local community
Co-creating with local communities enables the creation of solutions that can address the root cause, build a sense of ownership, provide opportunities for economic improvement for the communities involved, and promote the sustainability of the solution.
