Leading in Tourism, Left Behind in Waste and Food Management
The Sihotang Village (Bius Sihotang), consisting of four villages located in Harian District, Samosir Regency, North Sumatra Province, is home to 917 families and is a top-tier tourist destination for both domestic and international visitors. According to data from the Samosir Regency Tourism Office, the number of tourists visiting Samosir Regency in 2019 was 418,271, doubling to 860,892 in 2022. This increase in the number of tourists represents a 106% growth and is expected to continue rising.

However, Sihotang Village still faces challenges in waste and food management. Waste management issues arise because of the distance to the city center and damaged road conditions for waste collection. Additionally, a lack of education on management and marketing of commodities leads to food loss.
180kg
waste during peak season is burned in an open method from four villages and surrounding tourist attractions.

Implemented Solution
The Samosir Mallatam Project aims to managing local waste and food to provide economic benefits, enabling:

  • Reducing environmental damage potential due to waste burning and food loss.
  • Serving a cleaner, greener, and eco- friendly tourism experience for tourists.
  • Help to improve livelihoods through involvement in the tourism value chain.

This pilot project will begin with the implementation of innovative solutions in Hariarapohan, a village that won second place in the 2023 Indonesian Tourism Village Awards competition organized by the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy in the homestay and toilet categories. Hopefully this pilot project can be easily adopted by other tourist destinations, thus expanding more advanced tourist destinations along with the communities.
Build 3R Waste (Reduce-Reuse-Recycle)Management Site
Will carry out transportation, sorting, and management of inorganic and residual waste into useful products such as fuel, souvenir glasses, and eco-brick decorations, as well as support transportation services to areas that have not yet received transportation services.
Development of ”Sopo Pangan”
As the meaning of 'Sopo' is house, this building will be used as a place to process potential food waste, such as excess bananas, into economically valuable products. This project will also explore the management of excess food potential from other local commodities that can help increase the income of landowners.
Mentoring and Training
Mentoring and training are provided to the community of village managers, consolidated at Sopo, including training in food product management, food processing, marketing training, digital marketing, finance, 3R waste management training, crop sorting, as well as serving as a community meeting hall.
